Clematis

Daydreaming, drifting off, never quite present in the room

What it feels like

You are physically here and mentally somewhere much better. The meeting is happening and you are three chapters into an imagined future where things have worked out. People have to say your name twice. You lose your keys, miss your stop, and read the same paragraph four times without taking any of it in. There is nothing unhappy about it, which is part of the appeal. The daydream is more pleasant than the afternoon, so you keep going back to it. The cost is that the actual day passes without you, and things that need your attention quietly pile up.

Signs you might need it

  • People tell you that you were miles away
  • You lose track of what someone just said
  • You prefer thinking about the future to dealing with today
  • You are drowsy, need a lot of sleep, and find waking up slow
  • You are forgetful about practical things, keys, stops, appointments
  • You feel faint or light headed easily

What it helps with

Your attention comes back into the room. The imagination stays, which is worth keeping, but it becomes something you use rather than somewhere you disappear to.

Not to be confused with

Honeysuckle, which drifts backwards into the past rather than forwards into a daydream. Wild Rose is flatter and more resigned, with no pleasant elsewhere to go to. Hornbeam is about reluctance rather than absence.

Those who are dreamy, drowsy, not fully awake, no great interest in life. Quiet people, not really happy in their present circumstances, living more in the future than in the present, living in hopes of happier times.
Dr Edward Bach, The Twelve Healers, 1936

The plant

Old man's beard, the scrambling wild clematis that covers hedges along chalky lanes. It has no strong stem of its own and climbs over whatever is nearby, and by autumn it turns into drifts of silvery seed heads that look like smoke on the hedgerow.

How to take it

The usual way is two drops from the stock bottle into a small glass of water, sipped through the day. If you are mixing several remedies, put two drops of each into a 30ml bottle of spring water and take four drops from that, four times a day.

There is no need to time it around meals, and you can take it as often as you like. Most people give it two weeks before deciding whether it is doing anything. The full guide to taking them covers mixing bottles, timing and the alcohol question.

Common questions

These are about Clematis. The questions about the remedies in general, alcohol, children, timing, live in the FAQ.

Is Clematis in Rescue Remedy?

Yes. It is one of the five in that crisis formula, with Rock Rose, Impatiens, Star of Bethlehem and Cherry Plum. It is included for the faint, far-away feeling people get in a shock.

Is Clematis good for concentration?

It is the usual choice when poor concentration comes from drifting off into daydreams. If your attention is instead being eaten by a worry going round on a loop, White Chestnut fits better.

What is the difference between Clematis and Honeysuckle?

Which direction your mind travels. Clematis goes forwards into an imagined better future. Honeysuckle goes backwards into memory and nostalgia.

Not sure Clematis is the one?

Choosing works by recognizing yourself in a description, so if this one only half fits, it is worth seeing what else comes up. The quiz narrows all 38 in about a minute, and the not fully here group holds the nearest neighbors.
