Wild Rose

Resignation and apathy, drifting through a life you have stopped expecting much from

What it feels like

You have accepted things, and not in a good way. The job that was meant to be temporary is now nine years old. The relationship is fine. The weekend will be much like the last one. Asked if you are happy you would say it is what it is, and mean it. There is no drama here, no crying, no complaining, which is why it often goes unnoticed for years. The people around you may not realize anything is wrong, because nothing is wrong exactly. You have simply stopped expecting the day to contain anything much, so it does not.

Signs you might need it

  • You say it is what it is and genuinely feel that
  • You have stopped making plans because there seems little point
  • You do not complain, you have just accepted it
  • Weekends and evenings pass without much happening
  • You feel flat rather than sad
  • You cannot remember the last thing you looked forward to

What it helps with

Interest starts coming back. Small things become worth doing again, and with them the sense that the shape of your life is something you have a say in rather than something that happened to you.

Not to be confused with

Gorse, which has tried hard and lost hope. Wild Rose has not really tried, and does not feel strongly about it either way. Clematis at least has a daydream to escape into, and Olive is genuinely exhausted rather than uninterested.

Those who without apparently sufficient reason become resigned to all that happens, and just glide through life, take it as it is, without any effort to improve things and find some joy.
Dr Edward Bach, The Twelve Healers, 1936

The plant

The dog rose of English hedgerows, pale pink and simple, scrambling wherever the hedge lets it. It flowers briefly and asks nothing of anyone, then produces the hips that see the birds through winter.

How to take it

The usual way is two drops from the stock bottle into a small glass of water, sipped through the day. If you are mixing several remedies, put two drops of each into a 30ml bottle of spring water and take four drops from that, four times a day.

There is no need to time it around meals, and you can take it as often as you like. Most people give it two weeks before deciding whether it is doing anything. The full guide to taking them covers mixing bottles, timing and the alcohol question.

Common questions

These are about Wild Rose. The questions about the remedies in general, alcohol, children, timing, live in the FAQ.

What is the difference between Wild Rose and Gorse?

Effort. Gorse has tried repeatedly and concluded nothing will help, and there is real disappointment behind it. Wild Rose has quietly accepted things without much feeling attached at all.

Is Wild Rose for apathy or low mood?

It is the traditional choice for apathy, that flat resigned drifting where nothing much matters. People describe interest coming back in small ways first, a bit of curiosity about something they had stopped noticing.

How do I know if it is Wild Rose or Hornbeam?

Hornbeam has energy once it gets started, it is the beginning that feels heavy. Wild Rose does not perk up once underway, because the interest is not there in the first place.

Not sure Wild Rose is the one?

Choosing works by recognizing yourself in a description, so if this one only half fits, it is worth seeing what else comes up. The quiz narrows all 38 in about a minute, and the not fully here group holds the nearest neighbors.
