White Chestnut
Thoughts going round and round that you cannot switch off
What it feels like
The same thought, again. It is two in the morning and you are replaying a conversation from Tuesday, editing what you should have said. Or you are running a worry through for the fortieth time even though nothing new has come out of the first thirty-nine. You are not thinking, you are circling. It carries on while you brush your teeth and while someone is telling you about their weekend, so you miss half of it. You cannot argue your way out because the argument is the problem. Most people describe it as a tape that will not stop, and the tiredness that comes with it is real.
Signs you might need it
- The same thought or conversation replays on a loop
- You lie awake with a busy head rather than a specific fear
- You mentally rehearse arguments you will never have
- You miss what people say because you are elsewhere in your head
- You cannot concentrate because of the background noise
- You wake tired even after enough hours in bed
What it helps with
The loop quietens and your mind gets some peace. Thoughts start arriving and then leaving again, rather than coming round for another lap.
Not to be confused with
Aspen, which is dread with no thought attached, and Cerato, which is turning a decision over while collecting opinions. White Chestnut has no decision in it at all, only repetition.
For those who cannot prevent thoughts, ideas, arguments which they do not desire from entering their minds. Usually at such times when the interest of the moment is not strong enough to keep the mind full.
The plant
The horse chestnut, the conker tree, with its white flower candles standing upright on the branches in May. This remedy uses the flowers, while Chestnut Bud uses the sticky buds of the same tree earlier in the year.
How to take it
The usual way is two drops from the stock bottle into a small glass of water, sipped through the day. If you are mixing several remedies, put two drops of each into a 30ml bottle of spring water and take four drops from that, four times a day.
There is no need to time it around meals, and you can take it as often as you like. Most people give it two weeks before deciding whether it is doing anything. The full guide to taking them covers mixing bottles, timing and the alcohol question.

Combinations mixed for a situation rather than for a person. Each one is shown with the reason White Chestnut is in it.
- The anxiety blendFor the loop. The same worry and the same three sentences, round again at two in the morning.
- The sleep blendThe one added for night, and the one doing the heavy lifting. For the loop, the same conversation going round again at two in the morning.
- The stress blendFor the head that stays on duty all evening, replaying the day and rehearsing tomorrow.
- The focus blendFor a head already full. The page is in front of you and your attention is on yesterday's conversation.
- The pet sleep blendThe one added for night. For the preoccupied, fixated animal that cannot seem to let something go and settle.
Common questions
These are about White Chestnut. The questions about the remedies in general, alcohol, children, timing, live in the FAQ.
Is White Chestnut good for overthinking at night?
It is the most commonly chosen remedy for exactly that, a mind that will not settle when the lights go off. Many people take it in water an hour before bed and again if they wake.
Is White Chestnut the same as Red Chestnut?
No, though they come from related trees. White Chestnut is repetitive thinking about anything at all. Red Chestnut is specifically fear for other people. If you are worrying about your family on a loop, both fit.
Can I take White Chestnut for insomnia?
It is often chosen when sleeplessness comes from a busy head rather than from pain or an unsettled routine. It is worth pairing with the ordinary things that help sleep, like a dark room and a consistent bedtime.
Is White Chestnut in Rescue Remedy?
No. The five in that blend are Rock Rose, Impatiens, Clematis, Star of Bethlehem and Cherry Plum. White Chestnut is usually taken on its own or in a personal mix.
Not sure White Chestnut is the one?
Choosing works by recognizing yourself in a description, so if this one only half fits, it is worth seeing what else comes up. The quiz narrows all 38 in about a minute, and the not fully here group holds the nearest neighbors.
