Larch

Expecting to fail, so not trying in the first place

What it feels like

You did not apply. The job was right, you could have done it, and you read the description and decided they would want someone better. It is not that you tried and it went badly. You skipped the attempt, because you already knew how it would end. You watch people with less ability get further because they put their hand up, and that is the frustrating part, since you can see exactly what is happening. It shows up in small ways too, not speaking in the meeting though you had the better idea, not sending the message, not booking the thing.

Signs you might need it

  • You decide you will fail before you have tried
  • You do not apply, ask or volunteer, though you could do the job
  • You compare yourself unfavorably with people around you
  • You stay quiet in meetings even when you know the answer
  • You put success down to luck when it happens
  • You avoid situations where you might be seen to fall short

What it helps with

You start trying. Traditionally it is associated with a quiet confidence rather than a swagger, the sense that you are as entitled to try as anyone else is.

Not to be confused with

Pine, which is guilt about something you did rather than doubt about what you can do. Cerato doubts its judgment rather than its ability, and Gentian has actually tried and been knocked back.

For those who do not consider themselves as good or capable as those around them, who expect failure, who feel that they will never be a success, and so do not venture or make a strong enough attempt to succeed.
Dr Edward Bach, The Twelve Healers, 1936

The plant

The larch is a conifer that behaves like a broadleaf, dropping all its needles every autumn and growing them back in spring. Its small red spring flowers are easy to miss on a tree most people think of as plain.

How to take it

The usual way is two drops from the stock bottle into a small glass of water, sipped through the day. If you are mixing several remedies, put two drops of each into a 30ml bottle of spring water and take four drops from that, four times a day.

There is no need to time it around meals, and you can take it as often as you like. Most people give it two weeks before deciding whether it is doing anything. The full guide to taking them covers mixing bottles, timing and the alcohol question.

Common questions

These are about Larch. The questions about the remedies in general, alcohol, children, timing, live in the FAQ.

Is Larch the confidence remedy?

It is the one most people mean by that. It describes expecting to fail and therefore not trying. If your problem is nerves about a specific event rather than belief in your ability, Mimulus is the better match, and plenty of people take both before an interview.

What is the difference between Larch and Pine?

Larch says I am not good enough to do it. Pine says it was my fault. One is about capability, the other about blame, and it is common to recognize both.

Can Larch help with imposter feelings at work?

It is the usual choice for that, particularly the part where you avoid opportunities because you expect to be found out. People describe a quiet confidence rather than a swagger, the sense that you are as entitled to try as anyone else is.

Not sure Larch is the one?

Choosing works by recognizing yourself in a description, so if this one only half fits, it is worth seeing what else comes up. The quiz narrows all 38 in about a minute, and the despondency and despair group holds the nearest neighbors.
