Olive vs Hornbeam

Olive is tiredness after the effort. Hornbeam is tiredness before it. If rest genuinely helps, it is Olive. If you feel fine once you get going, it is Hornbeam.

Why they get muddled

Both describe somebody who is tired, and both will use that exact word when you ask. One word is covering two completely different states, which makes this one of the most useful distinctions in the whole system.

The differences

  • Where the tiredness sits

    Olive

Behind the work. You have done something long or hard and you are depleted.

    Hornbeam

In front of the work. You have not started, and starting is the exhausting part.

  • What happens when you begin

    Olive

It gets harder. You run out partway through.

    Hornbeam

It usually lifts. Once you are moving you are mostly fine.

  • Does sleep help

    Olive

It should, and lately it has stopped working.

    Hornbeam

You slept perfectly well. That was never the problem.

  • What it follows

    Olive

Illness, caring for somebody, a long stretch of strain.

    Hornbeam

Nothing in particular. Often a Monday, or a routine that has gone stale.

Which one to pick

Choose Olive if

  • You are worn out after a genuinely long or hard stretch
  • Sleep no longer leaves you feeling recovered
  • Everyday tasks take much more out of you than they should

Choose Hornbeam if

  • You wake tired at the thought of the day rather than after it
  • You put things off and do the easier jobs instead
  • Once you actually start, you are usually fine

What if both sound right?

If you cannot tell, try Hornbeam first, because the answer comes back quickly. A week of feeling fine by half past nine is a strong hint. If the tiredness is still there at the end of every day, Olive is the one.

Common questions

What if I am tired all the time?

Look at what happens when you start something. If you rally, Hornbeam. If you fade, Olive. Anyone going through a long hard stretch may well need both, one for the depletion and one for the reluctance.

Is Olive the remedy for burnout?

It is the closest match in the system for having nothing left after a long stretch. If you are just as exhausted but refuse to stop, Oak is the more accurate picture, and those two are commonly taken together.
