Scleranthus

Swinging between two options and never quite landing

What it feels like

Two choices, and you have been going back and forth between them for two weeks. The job or the other job. Go to the thing or stay in. This morning you were certain, by lunchtime you had swapped, and by evening you were back where you started. Unlike Cerato, you do not ask anyone. The whole argument happens inside your head, which is exhausting and invisible, so people around you have no idea you have made the same decision nine times. The mood can swing the same way, cheerful then flat within an hour, with nothing in particular causing the turn.

Signs you might need it

  • You change your mind repeatedly between exactly two options
  • You keep the whole debate to yourself
  • You often miss the moment because you were still deciding
  • Your mood shifts up and down through the day for no clear reason
  • You find it hard to answer a simple which would you prefer
  • You are prone to travel sickness or a sense of being unbalanced

What it helps with

You settle. Decisions start to land and stay landed, and the internal seesaw quietens enough that you can act on the first answer rather than the fifth.

Not to be confused with

Cerato, which asks everybody else for an answer instead of arguing with itself. And Wild Oat, which is not choosing between two known options but drifting because nothing feels like the right direction at all.

Those who suffer much from being unable to decide between two things, first one seeming right then the other. They are usually quiet people, and bear their difficulty alone, as they are not inclined to discuss it with others.
Dr Edward Bach, The Twelve Healers, 1936

The plant

An easily missed little plant of sandy fields and bare ground, with tiny green flowers and no petals to speak of. It sprawls rather than growing upright, spreading in no particular direction, which is a fair picture of the state it is used for.

How to take it

The usual way is two drops from the stock bottle into a small glass of water, sipped through the day. If you are mixing several remedies, put two drops of each into a 30ml bottle of spring water and take four drops from that, four times a day.

There is no need to time it around meals, and you can take it as often as you like. Most people give it two weeks before deciding whether it is doing anything. The full guide to taking them covers mixing bottles, timing and the alcohol question.

Common questions

These are about Scleranthus. The questions about the remedies in general, alcohol, children, timing, live in the FAQ.

Is Scleranthus for indecision?

It is the classic choice, specifically for indecision between two options that you turn over privately. If you find yourself asking friends and family what they would do, Cerato fits better.

Can Scleranthus help with mood swings?

It is the traditional choice for moods that swing from one extreme to the other with nothing obvious causing the turn. Most people take it for several weeks, since it describes a long standing pattern rather than a passing mood.

Why do people mention travel sickness with Scleranthus?

The remedy is associated with a general sense of being off balance, and practitioners have long suggested it for people who feel unsteady in cars and boats. That is traditional use rather than anything proven, so treat it as a gentle extra rather than a solution.

Not sure Scleranthus is the one?

Choosing works by recognizing yourself in a description, so if this one only half fits, it is worth seeing what else comes up. The quiz narrows all 38 in about a minute, and the uncertainty group holds the nearest neighbors.
