Over-care for others

Vine

Naturally in charge, and inclined to take over whether or not you were asked

What it feels like

You are good in a crisis and everyone knows it. You see what needs doing and you say so, and things get done because you said it. The difficulty is that the same instinct arrives in situations where nobody asked. A colleague's project gets reorganized because you could see a better way. A family decision gets settled because you settled it. You are usually right, which is precisely what makes it hard for anyone to push back. Over time people stop offering opinions around you, and you end up with a team that does what it is told and never tells you anything useful.

Signs you might need it

  • You take charge without being asked, and are usually right
  • You find it faster to instruct than to discuss
  • People rarely disagree with you, even when they should
  • You have little patience with group decision making
  • You are the one others look to in a crisis
  • You struggle to let people do things their own way

What it helps with

The leadership stays and the pressure comes out of it. Traditionally it is associated with becoming the sort of leader people follow willingly, which is a good deal more useful than one they simply obey.

Not to be confused with

Vervain, which argues passionately to win you over. Vine does not argue, it decides. Beech criticizes without wanting control, and Rock Water applies the same firmness to itself instead of to other people.

Very capable people, certain of their own ability, confident of success. Being so assured, they think that it would be for the benefit of others if they could be persuaded to do things as they themselves do, or as they are certain is right.
Dr Edward Bach, The Twelve Healers, 1936

The plant

The grape vine, a plant that will take over a whole wall or tree if it is left alone, and which produces its best fruit when it is pruned hard. It has been cultivated for thousands of years precisely because it responds so well to being given limits.

How to take it

The usual way is two drops from the stock bottle into a small glass of water, sipped through the day. If you are mixing several remedies, put two drops of each into a 30ml bottle of spring water and take four drops from that, four times a day.

There is no need to time it around meals, and you can take it as often as you like. Most people give it two weeks before deciding whether it is doing anything. The full guide to taking them covers mixing bottles, timing and the alcohol question.

Common questions

These are about Vine. The questions about the remedies in general, alcohol, children, timing, live in the FAQ.

What is the difference between Vine and Vervain?

Whether they try to convince you. Vervain will talk you round for an hour because it believes in the cause. Vine expects to be followed and does not see the need for the conversation.

Is Vine a bad remedy to need?

Not at all. The capability behind it is real, and Bach was clear that these people make excellent leaders in a genuine emergency. It is only worth looking at when the same instinct turns up in situations that did not call for it.

Can Vine help with being controlling in a relationship?

It is the closest match for that pattern, and people do use it that way. Traditionally it is associated with becoming the sort of person others follow willingly rather than obey, which tends to make everything at home a good deal easier.

Not sure Vine is the one?

Choosing works by recognizing yourself in a description, so if this one only half fits, it is worth seeing what else comes up. The quiz narrows all 38 in about a minute, and the over-care for others group holds the nearest neighbors.
